Issued: 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 20, 2022
SUBJECT: Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety Update – issued for the Trent-Severn Waterway (Kawartha Lakes, Otonabee River, Rice Lake, and Trent River).
ISSUED TO: Municipalities bordering the Kawartha Lakes from Young’s Point to Lakefield, the Otonabee River, Rice Lake, and the Trent River to Hastings (Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Peterborough, and Trent Hills), and Otonabee Conservation’s other partners in flood emergency management.
A Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety is issued when high flows could be dangerous, but flooding is not expected.
Conditions Along the Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW): Over the past 20 days, watersheds draining into the Kawartha Lakes from the north have received 100% to 200% of the normal total amount of rainfall for this time of year, causing unusually higher-than-normal water levels and flows along the TSW (i.e., Kawartha Lakes, Otonabee River, Rice Lake and Trent River).
As of Monday, June 20, 2002, Locks 1 – Trenton through to Locks 19 – Scotts Mills and Locks 22 – Nassau through Lock 27 – Young’s Point are closed to navigation until further notice. This partial closure will protect boater safety and help to prevent shoreline erosion and property damage. Boaters are requested to lower their speeds and watch their wake.
For more information about the TSW, visit www.parkscanada.gc.ca/trent, or follow the TSW on Facebook and Twitter @TrentSevernNHS. For the most current boater specific information, follow the TSW on Twitter: @TSWBoaterInfo, @VNTSInfoNav. Also, you can phone: 705-750-4950.
Residents and visitors are reminded to exercise extreme caution on and around the water because water is an extremely powerful force that should never be underestimated. Caregivers are reminded that children and pets should not be allowed to approach the edge of waterbodies/watercourses.
KEEP S.A.F.E. – Stay Away From Edges of riverbanks/lakeshores as they will be slippery and the banks may collapse because they are undercut.
Area water information can be monitored on-line at:
- Trent-Severn Waterway’s Water Management InfoNet
- Water Survey of Canada Real-Time Hydrometric Data
- Otonabee Conservation Precipitation and Water Level Data
This WATERSHED CONDITIONS STATEMENT will remain in effect until further notice.
