SUBJECT: Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety – Update issued for the Trent-Severn Waterway
ISSUED TO: Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough and Trent Hills, and Otonabee Conservation’s other partners in flood emergency management.
A Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety is issued when high flows and/or other factors could pose a risk to public safety on and around waterways, but flooding is not expected.
CURRENT WATERSHED CONDITIONS and RISK – As a result of heavy rains, the water levels and flows on the Otonabee River are much higher than typical for this time of year along the entire portion of the Trent-Severn Waterway within the Otonabee Conservation jurisdiction. High flows and high water levels are expected to remain along the Otonabee River until the Thanksgiving Weekend.
Parks Canada manages the water along the Trent-Severn Waterway and they are working to address high water levels and flows caused by recent high amounts of rain and more rain forecasted for this weekend.
Parks Canada has updated their advisement:
Lock 1 Trenton to Lock 27 Young’s Point (excluding Locks 20 Ashburnham and Lock 21 Peterborough Lift Lock) will remain closed to recreational boat traffic until the morning of Saturday, October 2.
Lockage in this area will be available on Saturday, October 2 for the purpose of allowing boaters to clear the system.
Boaters currently in this area are requested to contact Trent-Severn Waterway operations (705-750-4517) who will coordinate and facilitate your exit from the system.
The system in this area will then close again on Sunday, October 3.
We are working towards reopening navigation in this area for the Thanksgiving Weekend, pending suitable water levels and flows. We will provide an update on this on Wednesday, October 6.
During this period of above normal water levels and flows, residents and visitors should exercise extreme caution on and around water. Caregivers are advised to keep a close watch on children, keeping them away from the water’s edge. Bridges, culverts, dams, and other water control/water conveyance structures should be always avoided.
