SUBJECT: Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety issued for the Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW)
ISSUED TO: Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough and Trent Hills, and Otonabee Conservation’s other partners in flood emergency management.
A Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety is issued when high flows and/or other factors could pose a risk to public safety on and around waterways, but flooding is not expected.
CURRENT WATERSHED CONDITIONS and RISK – Effective immediately, Otonabee Conservation is advising the public to expect water levels and flows that are higher than typical for this time of year across the entire navigable route of the Trent-Severn Waterway.
Water levels and flows are above normal for this time of year due to the high amounts of precipitation received last week across the Trent-Severn Waterway, including in the Haliburton Reservoir Lakes Region, which feeds south into the Kawartha Lakes.
Water levels and flows will be especially high starting Tuesday, September 28 through Thursday, September 30 as Parks Canada manages the movement of water through the system to address the higher- than-normal water levels caused by recent precipitation. Parks Canada is advising the public that the Trent-Severn Waterway from Lock 1 to Lock 27 will be closed during this period. In addition, these higher-than-normal water levels/flows pose a risk to loss of life or serious injury for other water-related recreational activities – fishing, swimming, etc.
During this period of above normal water levels and flows, residents and visitors should exercise extreme caution on and around water. Caregivers are advised to keep a close watch on children, keeping them away from the water’s edge. Bridges, culverts, dams, and other water control/water conveyance structures should be always avoided.
