MESSAGE # 2020-22
ISSUED: 3:00 p.m., Tuesday April 28, 2020
WATERSHED CONDITIONS STATEMENT – WATER SAFETY.
ISSUED TO: Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough, Trent Hills, and Otonabee Conservation’s other partners in flood emergency management.
DEFINITION: A WATERSHED CONDITIONS STATEMENT – WATER SAFETY is issued when high flows, unsafe banks, melting ice or other factors could be dangerous for recreational users such as anglers, canoeists, hikers, children, pets, etc. Flooding is not expected.
Otonabee Conservation advises that a weather system is moving into Ontario and will bring significant amount of rainfall. Starting Wednesday April 29th and continuing through Friday May 1st, a slow moving low pressure system will move across southern Ontario bringing the local 3-day rainfall accumulations in the 30-60 millimeter (mm) range.
The forecasted rainfall over 3 days will result in elevated water levels and flows in all lakes, rivers, streams and creeks. As a result, local waterbodies / watercourses will become more dangerous than normal, especially in the vicinity of water conveyance structures such as dams, culverts and bridges. Water accumulation and ponding on roads, intersections and low lying areas is possible. Flooding from rivers, streams and creeks is not anticipated.
Otonabee Conservation hereby advises area residents to keep away from all waterbodies / watercourses and water conveyance structures (e.g., dams, culverts and bridges), to stay clear of areas where water can be seen to be accumulating and ponding
This WATERSHED CONDITIONS STATEMENT – WATER SAFETY message will remain in effect until Sunday May 3, 2020.
