SUBJECT: WATERSHED CONDITIONS STATEMENT – WATER SAFETY issued for all watercourses / waterbodies in the geographical jurisdiction of Otonabee Conservation.
ISSUED TO: Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough and Trent Hills, and Otonabee Conservation’s other partners in flood emergency management.
A Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety is issued when high flows, ice or other factors could be dangerous, but flooding is not expected.
CURRENT WATERSHED CONDITIONS and RISK: Ice jamming is a concern in local watercourses because conditions are favourable for frazil ice generation (extreme cold air temperatures, turbulent water flows and open channels). Therefore, during this period of favourable conditions for frazil ice generation, Otonabee Conservation is advising municipalities and local visitors, residents and business owners to be watchful of rapidly changing water levels because frazil ice generation can lead to ice jamming, and ice jamming can cause floods and flood damages.

Water level and flow data for the Ouse, Indian and Otonabee River watersheds can be viewed on the Water Survey of Canada website: https://wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/search/real_time_e.html Active hydrometric stations available on-line at the Water Survey of Canada’s – Water Office website are, as follows:

In addition, all area watercourses and waterbodies are experiencing dangerously high water levels / flows, slippery banks and extremely cold water temperatures. It is most important, therefore, that area residents and visitors stay SAFE by Staying Away From the Edge of all watercourses / waterbodies – lakes, canals, rivers, streams, creeks, wetlands and drainage ditches.
