Siemens Canada, Tree Canada, and Otonabee Conservation partner to enhance habitat with native tree planting this fall
Otonabee Conservation planted 80 native trees and shrubs at the Siemens plant in Peterborough on September 24, 2021, in partnership with Tree Canada and Siemens Canada.
Employees from Siemens Canada Peterborough planted a variety of native species of trees and shrubs, White Pine, White Cedar, White Spruce, Choke Cherry and Elderberry, which will increase species diversity at the site and enhance habitat for local wildlife.
“This year is the 10th anniversary of Siemens Canada planting trees across the country in partnership with Tree Canada. Locally, working in partnership with Otonabee Conservation we have planted 1,591 trees at seven locations and engaged nearly 300 employees in planting trees,” said Ian Almond, Head of Location & General Manager of Siemens Milltronics, Siemens Canada Limited.
For ten years, Siemens Canada, Tree Canada, and Otonabee Conservation have collaborated to enhance the habitat around the watershed community in the City of Peterborough. “We are very pleased to be involved with tree planting each year and appreciate the contributions of our employees who make this project possible,” said Connie Condon, from Siemens Peterborough, who organized employee volunteers for the plantings.
“We are excited to be working with community partners again to undertake stewardship projects like this. This project is being undertaken during National Forest Week, and is a great way to recognize the importance of our local forests” said Dan Marinigh, CAO/Secretary-Treasurer at Otonabee Conservation, “We are committed to creating a greener environment and planting trees is just one way we can locally adapt to climate change. Projects like this confirm our commitment to a healthier community, one tree at a time.”
“We take great pride in supporting this annual event, which engages the community and benefits the environment,” says Faisal Kazi, President and CEO, Siemens Canada. “With all safety protocols in place we’re pleased that we can continue this proud tradition with our employees and partners.”
Tree Canada is the only national non-profit organization dedicated to planting and nurturing trees in rural and urban environments. To date, with their community partners and sponsors, they have planted more than 83 million trees. Nurturing urban and rural forestry not only sustains Canada’s proud heritage of biodiversity and natural beauty, but also creates a healthier, more sustainable environment for all.
“Our mission at Tree Canada is to grow better places to live through planting and nurturing trees and we are thrilled that Siemens Canada and Otonabee Conservation share the same goal,” says Danielle St-Aubin, CEO, Tree Canada. “We are so grateful to Siemens Canada and Otonabee Conservation for their continued environmental leadership and support, especially during such an important week as National Forest Week.”
