Over 400 trees and shrubs planted at the new Peterborough Humane Society site as the focus of 2022 TD Tree Days event

On Saturday, October 22nd, over 50 volunteers planted over 400 trees and shrubs at the new Peterborough Humane Society facility site at 1999 Technology Drive. This planting was supported by TD Tree Days, a program that contributes to the TD Ready Commitment target of helping plant 1 million trees by 2030.
TD Tree Days has been bringing people together since 2010 and is aims to create a more vibrant planet by growing and enhancing green spaces. TD works with organizations across Canada such as Otonabee Conservation, to ensure that the right tree is properly planted in the right place, in each community.
The native species planted, including Staghorn Sumac, Willow, and Red Osier Dogwood, will support natural diversity, help to mitigate climate change, and help to filter rainwater that flows to the stormwater retention pond and from the adjacent parking lot.
“It truly means the world to us to see our community come together and put their own sweat and effort into this project. Partnerships like this one with Otonabee Conservation along with TD Friends of the Environment, our local TD branches, and the 70+ volunteers that came out to lend a hand with this initiative, makes such a positive impact on our new Centre, while also supporting our environment, which makes it even better!”
Shawn Morey, Executive Director, Peterborough Humane Society
The Peterborough Animal Care Centre is set to be complete before the end of 2022 with a soft opening in January 2023. This innovative Centre will host three programs under one roof: a publicly accessible Spay and Neuter Clinic, an Education and Adoption Centre, and a cutting-edge Dog Rehabilitation Centre in partnership with the Ontario SPCA & Humane Society. It will be a community hub and feature an off-leash dog park, private event space, and patio.
Janette Lovey-Smith, CAO / Secretary-Treasurer at Otonabee Conservation, explained, “These trees will provide countless benefits from mitigating the effects of climate change to regulating temperatures and providing beauty for all to enjoy at the new Humane Society Centre.”
