Pollinator garden plantings were undertaken at two schoolgrounds as part of the Pathway to Stewardship Project, to enhance habitat for birds and other wildlife, and to encourage pollinators.
Highland Heights Public School
Approximately 45 students from Highland Heights PS participated, planting 75 native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers in gardens across their school yard (photos below).







R.F. Downey Public School
Approximately 250 students from R.F. Downey PS participated from 11 classes from kindergarten to grade 6, planting 41 native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers in gardens across their school yard (photos below).







Pathway to Stewardship Landmarks
Classes carried out Pathway to Stewardship Landmarks during the plantings!
Kindergarten:
- Landmark 5: Help in a Garden or Look After an Animal
- Students helped to plant a tree and learned about the different species that will utilize the tree for habitat
Grade 1 and 2:
- Landmark 9: Visit your own special outdoor place
- Students visited the garden areas in the schoolyard and helped prepare the gardens for planting, and installed the plants
- Landmark 12: Meeting the Friends in Your Neighbourhood
- Students learned about the different species that inhabit the Otonabee Region Watershed
Grade 5 and 6:
- Explore Biodiversity
- Students learned about native plants, habitat, different local species of birds, insects and pollinators
