Celebrating National Forest Week by planting more than 30,000 trees and shrubs this fall!
September 21 is National Tree Day and this fall, National Forest Week is celebrated from September 18-24, 2022.Each year, National Forest Week encourages Canadians to learn more about our forest heritage and increases awareness about the value of forests as a fundamental part of our culture, traditions, economy, and history.
The benefits of trees are widely known. Planting trees helps regulate temperatures and provides shelter to wildlife; trees also filter the air we breathe, capture carbon dioxide mitigating climate change, and stabilize the ground preventing erosion and reducing stormwater runoff and flooding.
Each year, Otonabee Conservation celebrates National Forest Week with tree plantings throughout the watershed. While National Forest Week is celebrated over 7 days, Otonabee Conservation’s tree planting events will take place throughout the Fall.
Otonabee Conservation will plant over 30,000 trees and shrubs with a variety of community partners, including City of Peterborough, Township of Douro-Dummer, Selwyn Township, Siemens Canada, NEFAB, Skyline Developments, LCBO, Peterborough Humane Society, and students from KPRDSB and PVNCCDSB secondary schools. These plantings are possible with generous financial support from Tree Canada, TD Canada Trust, and One Tree Planted.

The average tree sequesters 220-225 kg of Carbon over an 80-year period. That means that the trees and shrubs we plant this fall here in the Otonabee Region watershed will sequester nearly 6.7 million kg of Carbon over their lifetime!
