The Otonabee Conservation AGM celebrates successes in 2021, brings on new Chair and Vice Chair, and highlights Climate Action with Keynote Speaker, Malaika Collette
The Otonabee Conservation Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held online on the evening of January 20th. Over 50 watershed residents, supporters, donors, staff, and members of the board of directors joined together virtually to celebrate Otonabee Conservation’s accomplishments in 2021.

This year, a new Chair and Vice-Chair were appointed. Councillor Ryan Huntley from the Township of Cavan-Monaghan will step up from his role as Vice Chair, into the role of Chair; stepping down after filling the role since 2014, is Mayor of Selwyn Township Andy Mitchell. For 2022, the role of Vice Chair will be held by Councillor & Deputy Mayor Michael Metcalf from the Municipality of Trent Hills.
“In his seven year tenure as Board Chair, Andy Mitchell has chaired around 100 meetings for the Otonabee Conservation Board of Directors,” Shared the newly elected Board Chair, Ryan Huntley, “We have accomplished a lot together under Andy’s leadership and guidance, and he has inspired all board members to continue our good work with Otonabee Conservation.”
Attendees of the AGM were inspired by presenter and keynote speaker, local youth climate activist, Malaika Collette. She spoke about her inspiration for climate action in the Peterborough Region, and how her passion for climate education has taken her work and activism to the national and international stage, including attending and participating in last year’s COP26.
Each year at the AGM, Otonabee Conservation honours four watershed champions with the annual Environmental Excellence Awards. These awards recognize the outstanding people and groups within our watershed who have demonstrated the advancement of watershed health through projects on the landscape and actions that contribute to a healthier environment for everyone.
This year’s recipients of the Environmental Excellence Awards are:
CONSERVATION PARTNERSHIP AWARD | Awarded to Peterborough Public Health
Recognizing a municipal partner or agency who has made a significant, positive contribution to furthering the objectives of Otonabee Conservation in one or more areas of the Authority’s operations.
BUSINESS AWARD | Awarded to Trent University
Recognizing a business that has made a significant contribution to projects or programs at Otonabee Conservation, advancing our vision of a healthy watershed.
INDIVIDUAL CONSERVATIONIST AWARD | Awarded to Brianna Salmon
Recognizing outstanding people who have undertaken projects, demonstrated leadership, and inspired others to create a healthier watershed.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AWARD | Awarded to Trout Unlimited, Millbrook Chapter
Recognizing community or organized groups that have successfully undertaken projects that contribute to a healthier watershed.
