THIS FLOOD MESSAGE IS NO LONGER ACTIVE
Message # 2021-08
Issued: 2:15 p.m., Friday June 25, 2021
FLOOD WATCH issued for all waterbodies / watercourses in the watershed Region of Otonabee Conservation except the Trent-Severn Waterway
Issued to: Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough and Trent Hills, and Otonabee Conservation’s other partners in flood emergency management.
A FLOOD WATCH is issued to alert municipalities and residents that flood conditions are a possibility.
Threat: A multi-day system will bring waves of widespread rain and thunderstorms to the Region. The primary threat is that some rain events could turn torrential, and some thunderstorms could become severe.
Weather Forecast: The first wave of widespread rain will start about 5 p.m. today (Friday, June 25) and move through Friday evening and Friday night. Another wave of widespread rain and thunderstorms is expected for Saturday night. Sunday will bring a threat of passing thunderstorms throughout the day. Next week, there will be a daily threat of rain and thunderstorms. In total, the next 7 days is expected to deliver about 50 millimeters of rain to the Region, with a possibility of 100 millimeters or more as the result of possible torrential rain and/or severe thunderstorms.
During the next 7 days, there will also be periods of dry weather when area residents and visitors may be able to go outside to enjoy the warm, humid weather and beginning of summer. However, residents are advised to be extremely cautious around all local rivers, streams, creeks, and lakes because shorelines/riverbanks will be slippery and could be undercut, and stream currents may be strong. Road-side ditches, wetlands and other low-lying areas may experience unsafe ponding conditions. Dams and other water control/water conveyance structures are especially dangerous and should be always avoided.
While the forecasted wet weather brings the threat of flooding and may dampen some vacation plans and outdoor activities, there is an upside to this multi-day system. That is, the multi-day system will bring good soaking rain, with accumulations of around 50 millimeters over the next 7 days, and this may be enough to break the drought that has beset our Region.
With this message, Otonabee Conservation is advising all area municipalities and residents to prepare themselves for possible flooding. Area water information can be monitored on-line at:
- Trent-Severn Waterway’s Water Management InfoNet
- Water Survey of Canada Real-Time Hydrometric Data
- Otonabee Conservation Precipitation and Water Level Data
This FLOOD WATCH message will expire Friday, July 02, 2021, at 4 p.m. unless updated prior to this date and time.
