FLOOD WATCH issued for all waterbodies / watercourses in the watershed Region of Otonabee Conservation except the Trent-Severn Waterway
Issued to: Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough and Trent Hills, and Otonabee Conservation’s other partners in flood emergency management.
A FLOOD WATCH is issued to alert municipalities and residents that flood conditions are a possibility.
Threat: As Tropical Storm Elsa moves along the Atlantic coastline today, associated rainfall has moved into Southern Ontario. The system will bring waves of widespread rain and thunderstorms to the Region.
Weather Forecast: The forecast is for localized heavy rain and thunderstorms over this afternoon and into the evening. Rainfall amounts will be variable, with total amounts of 30-50mm possible. Higher amounts are possible due to thunderstorms.
Thunderstorms produce high intensity rainfall over a short period of time, which can cause soils to become saturated very quickly, resulting in increased runoff. Consequently, higher than normal water levels and flows can be expected in our streams, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges. Localized flooding is not expected, but heavy downpours could result in flooding of low lying and flood prone areas.
Residents are advised to be extremely cautious around all local rivers, streams, creeks, and lakes because shorelines/riverbanks will be slippery and could be undercut, and stream currents may be strong. Road-side ditches, wetlands and other low-lying areas may experience unsafe ponding conditions. Dams and other water control/water conveyance structures are especially dangerous and should be always avoided.
