This FLOOD WATCH message will be in effect until MONDAY, December 16th, 2019.
This FLOOD WATCH alerts municipalities, residents, and businesses that flood conditions are a possibility along the shores of the Region’s lakes, rivers, streams, creeks, and wetlands (excluding the Kawartha Lakes, Otonabee River, and Rice Lake).
A low-pressure weather system will move across southern Ontario bringing above-zero air temperatures and a total of 20 to 30 millimeters of rainfall to the area. The forecasted air temperatures and rainfall will begin tonight (Friday, December 13th) and continue throughout Saturday (December 14th), and into the overnight. By Sunday afternoon (December 15th), the event is expected to pass. The combination of snowmelt and rainfall over the next 48 hours may produce significant run-off.
Due to the potential amount of run-off from rainfall / snowmelt, combined with discontinuous frozen ground conditions, there is a possibility for nuisance or minor flooding in some of the watershed’s low-lying areas. As a minimum, the expected run-off will result in accumulations and ponding of water on the ground where there is poor drainage, along with higher than normal water levels and flows in the area’s waterways. As a minimum, area municipalities, residents, and businesses can expect potentially hazardous conditions such as water on the road in some locations.
With this message, the Otonabee Conservation advises area residents to:
1) have a watchful eye for possible flooding;
2) keep away from all waterbodies / watercourses and conveyance structures (e.g., dams, culverts and bridges); and,
3) stay clear of anywhere that water can be seen to be accumulating and ponding.
