Subject: FLOOD WATCH-CANCELLATION issued for all waterbodies/watercourses in the Otonabee Region watershed
Issued to: Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough and Trent Hills, and Otonabee Conservation’s other partners in flood emergency management.
The FLOOD WATCH issued for all waterbodies / watercourses in the Otonabee Region watershed on March 31, 2021 is hereby CANCELLED.
Current Conditions:
The warm temperatures have evaporated and melted the snowpack in the area north of the Kawartha Lakes (i.e., Haliburton Lakes/Reservoir Lakes Region). With the lack of rainfall and gentle melting of the snowpack, the flows within the rivers entering the Kawartha Lakes are below normal for this time of year.
Water levels and flows within the Ouse River, Indian River and Otonabee River watersheds have been dropping due to the warm and dry conditions.
Forecasted Conditions:
As of yesterday, reductions of outflows are currently being executed on all the Kawartha Lakes in the geographical jurisdiction of the Otonabee Region (Chemong, Buckhorn, Pigeon, Lower Buckhorn, Lovesick, Stony, Clear, Katchewanooka). Likewise, the flow of the Otonabee River will be reduced by 30 cubic meters per second (cms) today thereby lowering it to 70 cms (measured at Lakefield). This flow reduction will drop the water level of the Otonabee River at the end of Matchett Line in the Township of Otonabee-South Monaghan.
Otonabee Conservation will continue to monitor local weather, water level / flow, soil moisture, evapo-transpiration rates and other watershed conditions in conjunction with our partners.
