Campgrounds Open May 12th

Otonabee Conservation welcomes back campers and day use visitors for the 2023 operating season

Trilliums are in full bloom at the Warsaw Caves Conservation Area’s campground, giving campers a special show for opening weekend

May 12th is opening day of the 2023 camping season for Otonabee Conservation’s three campgrounds. Staff are excited to welcome back campers to Warsaw Caves Conservation Area, Beavermead Campground, and Lakefield Campground.

New this year, Otonabee Conservation is operating Lakefield Campground, which is owned by the Township of Selwyn. Seasonal campers are returning to their sites at the 12-acre campground on Hague Point in the Village of Lakefield, Ontario, which also offers unique day-use opportunities. Canoe and kayak rentals are available for paddling on Lake Katchewanooka, providing optimal wildlife viewing through the Lakefield Marsh, and visitors can also visit Lakefield Beach, walk the Lakefield Trail, and hike along to the Imagine The Marsh nature observation tower for beautiful views of the wetland.

Canoe and kayak rentals will also once again be available to visitors at Warsaw Caves CA and Beavermead Campground. At Warsaw Caves CA, paddlers can enjoy a trip along the Indian River with flat water, gentle current, beautiful scenery, and wildlife viewing. At Beavermead Campground, paddlers can access Meade Creek and paddle out into Little Lake and along the Otonabee River into downtown Peterborough.

“As always, we are happy to promote activities in nature, which boost mental health, relieve stress, and provide opportunities for families and friends to enjoy and appreciate the outdoors,” explains Jessie James, Manager of Conservation Lands at Otonabee Conservation, “Starting this year, we are particularly looking forward to welcoming campers at Lakefield Campground, in partnership with Selwyn Township.”

For overnight stays, Beavermead Campground offers campers a unique location within the City of Peterborough offering visitors opportunities for swimming, fishing, paddling, trails nearby, and is in the vicinity of the downtown core for shopping and restaurants, which are only minutes away by bicycle.

Warsaw Caves CA offers campers a more rustic experience with 52 un-serviced campsites located in a beautiful forest setting. Campers and day-use visitors can enjoy, swimming, fishing, paddling, and some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Kawartha’s. Visitors will surely enjoy spelunking through the series of seven caves found in the park that were formed thousands of years ago at the end of the last ice age, when a deep, swift, glacier-fed river shaped the landscape seen today.

There are still plenty of campsite bookings available for the 2023 camping season. Campers can reserve their site at Warsaw Caves Conservation Area, Beavermead Campground, and Lakefield Campground and conveniently pay online through the Let’s Camp reservation system.

Campers are encouraged to visit otonabeeconservation.com/camping-outdoor-recreation to plan their outdoor adventure in the Kawartha’s and learn more about the Conservation Areas within the Otonabee Region Watershed that provide a diverse range of outdoor activities for all ages and abilities.
